Honestly, we don't publish every single bike lane block photograph that comes our way (if we did, there wouldn't be room for all the other cyclist stories), but it seems appropriate to feature this one today. It was sent to us by reader David Roy, who says, "Several cycle commuters had to go into what's normally the parking lane (which was completely open) to avoid the 3 trucks." [MORE] | The internet is a dark, cruel place, filled with trolls and idiots trying to bombard you with their conspiracy theories or trying to one-up each other with racist jokes. But Assemblyman Micah Kellner wants to change all of that. In a new bill, Kellner would not only want to make identity theft a crime, but cyberbullying as well. "Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in a more personal kind of impersonation: the use of Internet anonymity to harass individuals," the bill states. Presumably to prove Kellner's point, one Daily News commenter demonstrated the role of a typical cyberbully: "The Politicians can't handle the thought of Blogger's and Post's, from people without their identity exposed. Orwellian at it's best." ... [ MORE ] | | There's still no grass in Bryant Parkunless of course you count this afternoon's grassroots protest against the capitalist swine who pay no income taxes. MoveOn.org sponsored the rally, which was intended to shame companies like Google, Verizon, General Electric, and Bank of America for dodging their tax bills and expose the "America is broke" lie that both parties parrot. But the hundred-something protesters were outnumbered by the weary grey drones who silently slid Chipotle down their numb gullets, thinking less of grabbing a pitchfork and more of the episodes of True Blood they're going to catch up on this weekend.... [ MORE ] | | More details have emerged about the shooting in a Brooklyn auto repair shop on Saturday night. When a group of five men tried to rob the shop, off-duty Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority officer Anthony Presley managed to shoot at the suspects while being fired at. Now it turns out that an off-duty NYPD school safety agent was also in the shop during the robbery, and he picked Presley's service revolver and fired at the suspects, "emptying the clip." The only problem: The school safety agent could face charges because he's not licensed to carry a gun.... [ MORE ] | | Well here's an interesting twist on the game of "movable Biden" that's been engaging the Beltway pretty much since Obama was inaugurated. Since last October when Bob Woodward mentioned it, the scuttlebutt had been that the Obama administration was mulling switching Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden around. But now former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown is arguing that maybe Biden will move into the Secretary of State role and Andrew Cuomo will step up to the Veep spot?... [ MORE ] | | The giant B&H Photo-Video emporium on 9th Avenue and 34th Street has long observed Jewish holidays...but we never realized just how crazy it can get before they close! Reader Michael Tapp took the above photo yesterday, and painted us a picture of the craziness of the scene: "The checkout line an hour before B&H Photo Video shuts down Passover (8 Days). The wait was over an hour long and one of the clerks said that this was the busiest he has ever seen the store. A few B&H employees couldn't even figure out where the line started on the 1st floor." ... [ MORE ] | | The MTA needs money. But apparently, the state Legislature is trying to keep them from getting that money. A new bill would commendably require that the MTA provide free MetroCards for the city's public school students, but also would require 25 percent off MetroCards for college kids, and free MetroCards for senior citizens, off-duty fire marshals, off-duty police officers and retired cops. It also wouldn't require the city or state to chip in, leaving the MTA to fend for itself. And while an extra $52 million a year could probably help, they're apparently losing that to lost and unused MetroCards.... [ MORE ] | | |
