Sarah Palin On Giffords Shooting, Brings Up Blood Libel

_Sarah Palin On Giffords Shooting, Brings Up Blood Libel

After the tragic Saturday assassination attempt on Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords outside a Tucson, Arizona supermarket that left six people dead and Giffords and more than a dozen others injured, former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin simply left a Facebook note, saying, "My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice." Now she's released a video, to add more of her sympathy and also defend herself, "After this shocking tragedy, I listened at first puzzled, then with concern, and now with sadness, to the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event." _The Snow Is Here!

The Snow Is Here!

After much hype, the first second snowfall of 2011 is here. City officials say the city is ready—it's a "weather emergency"—but admitted the commute will probably suck (the MTA has also listed how it's preparing for the snow). You can share your photographs with us by sending them to photos@gothamist.com or tagging them "gothamist" on Flickr. And let us know how snow plowing and mass transit seem (you can leave a comment, or contact us at photos@gothamist.com or tips@gothamist.com). ... [ MORE ]

Poodle Drowns In Prospect Park Lake

The owner of a poodle who drowned after chasing a bird onto Prospect Park’s iced over lake, is asking city officials what would have happened if her poodle had been a human child. On January 2nd, Viviane Arzoumanian’s 5-year-old poodle drowned after running on to the ice, off leash (which is not allowed at the park unless it's during the designated off-leash hours, and never allowed at the lake). Following the tragedy, Arzoumanian—admitting she was breaking park rules—has some ideas for the park that she believes could result in more effective animal rescues.... [ MORE ]

Mayor Bloomberg, Rep. King Take On Gun Laws

With the country still reeling from the apparent assassination attempt of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, which left six dead and many others injured, outside a Tucson, AZ supermarket, New York politicians have been speaking out about gun laws. Rep. Peter King (R-LI) announced that he would introduce a gun safety bill that would prohibit people from carrying a gun within a 1000 feet of the President, Vice President, members of Congress, and federal judges, "It is imperative that we do all that we can to give law enforcement the tools they need to ensure the safety of New Yorkers and prevent an attack before it happens." ... 81-Year-Old Mugged At Subway Station

Police are searching for a woman who robbed and shoved an 81-year-old woman to the ground at a downtown Manhattan subway station. On January 4 at 10:40 p.m., Madeline Klima was swiping her Metrocard at a turnstile at the Fulton Street station when the suspect approached her from behind. Klima, who works as an office cleaner, broke her shoulder and suffered a head laceration; she told the Post, "I knew my bag was gone and I yelled, 'I was robbed!' 'I was robbed!' ... [ MORE ]
_Bloomberg's Incessant Plows Ruin Everybody's Sleep

Bloomberg's Incessant Plows Ruin Everybody's Sleep

Well, it looks like the Bloomberg administration figured it out this time. A relatively low snowfall combined with the Mayor's 15 point action plan means that many New Yorkers woke up to clear streets and pretty good MTA service. But at what cost? City Council member David Greenfield wrote on Twitter, "Sign the city got this storm right: #1 complaint I got overnite: 'Snow plows came down my block so often I couldn't sleep.'" Oh, cruel city that has such service in it!... [ MORE ]
_A Weather Emergency Has Already Been Declared!

A Weather Emergency Has Already Been Declared!

Bloomberg is not taking any chances this time! No sir, not one bit. Unwilling to be criticized again for not declaring a snow emergency, Hizzoner has already gone and declared tonight's storm a "weather emergency." And what does that mean? It's a new designation one step down from snow emergency. In other words: tonight and tomorrow lets all try not to drive and certainly keep your vehicles off the roads. Also alternate side parking and garbage pick up are suspended again. For the full warning, keep reading.... [ MORE ]
_Local Paper Declares Next Big Neighborhood: Ridgewood

Local Paper Declares Next Big Neighborhood: Ridgewood

Where will all the priced-out masses go when they're forced to give up their Williamsburg digs in order to make way for more luxury condos and Duane Reades? According to Metro, the next big things are Hell's Kitchen, Ridgewood, Queens, and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (FDB) in Harlem. They admit Hell's Kitchen isn't quite an up-and-comer (people have been calling it that for years), so let's zero in on one of the newer names on the list: Ridgewood.... [ MORE ]
