NJ Lawmaker Wants All Bikes to Have License Plates

_NJ Lawmaker Wants All Bikes to Have License Plates
Our neighbors over in New Jersey are talking about a proposed law that NYC's virulent anti-bike crowd is sure to fall head-over-handlebars in love with. Democratic Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker wants to require all cyclists—from tots with training wheels to weekend warriors on Cannondales—to register their bikes and attach license plates to the back. Could it happen here? A spokesman for NYC's bike-friendly DOT told us to go ask the DMV. But over in the Garden State, Tucker says senior citizens are terrified of reckless bicycle riders with no accountability. [MORE]

Fancy That: People Upset With Palin's Use Of Blood Libel

Potential 2012 presidential candidate Sarah Palin's video statement about the Tucson shooting has been the hot topic today. And that's partly because of her use of the phrase "blood libel." The Anti-Defamation League's Abraham Foxman said, "We wish that Palin had not invoked the phrase 'blood-libel' in reference to the actions of journalists and pundits in placing blame for the shooting in Tucson on others. While the term 'blood-libel' has become part of the English parlance to refer to someone being falsely accused, we wish that Palin had used another phrase, instead of one so fraught with pain in Jewish history."... At Memorial, Obama Announces Giffords Opened Her Eyes

President Obama spoke at a memorial for those killed and injured in Saturday shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords outside a Tucson, Arizona supermarket, and told the country, "There is nothing I can say that will fill the sudden hole torn in your hearts. But know this: the hopes of a nation are here tonight. We mourn with you for the fallen," and also referred to the debate, "It's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds... If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let's make sure it's worthy of those we have lost. Let's make sure it's not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle." (Full text here, video below.) ... [ MORE ]

City Cancels Christmas Tree Recycling

If you didn't bring your Christmas tree to Mulchfest and left it on the curb thinking it would be recycled... think again. According to WNYC, those trees are going straight in the trash. A Department of Sanitation spokesperson told them that the annual Christmas tree recycling program was canceled this year after the department became overwhelmed by the December 26th blizzard. Christine Datz-Romero at the Lower East Side Ecology Center says this falls into a common pattern: "Whenever we have an emergency, recycling suffers." Hear that Mother Nature, next time you Blizzardgeddon us think of your precious trees first. ... [ MORE ]

Video: Rat In Subway Car Crawls Over Sleeping Man's Face

Good morning, let's start the day off right with this video of a rat running around a subway car. Yes, inside the train. The "highlight," as we noted in the title, is when the rat crawls up the leg and over the face of a sleeping man. Ha, ha. ... [ MORE ]

Let's Save This Cute Puppy Today

Last year we found a dog wandering the streets of Williamsburg and took him in to the office. After a trip to the vet, a microchip was discovered, and the dog and owner were reunited. Sadly, not all stories end this way, and earlier this week Nick Carr at ScoutingNY took in a dog that was left tied to the Williamsburg Bridge's pedestrian walkway... during the snowstorm. He says his friend found the dog "shivering, completely drenched and half-frozen... we’re almost certain her owners left her out in it overnight to die." She was taken to the vet, bathed, fed and is now rotating between the friends; Carr says "she’s been a doll. Hasn’t barked once—in fact, I think the only sound I’ve heard was when she began whimpering when I left the room." ... [ MORE ]

Jay-Z Invests In... Chicken Wings

Jay-Z has conquered the rap game, the business of selling records and running clubs, and he managed to take the Single Lady off the market—so what's left? He's now invested in Buffalo Boss, a modest chicken wing spot at 554 Fulton Street. The joint was opened by his first cousin three months ago, according to the Brooklyn Paper, and since word got out this week about Jay-Z's involvement, business has increased 60%! His cousin, Jama White, calls it "The Oprah Effect," and says "business is booming... We got a lot of attention real fast.” (So booming that they recently rewarded outstanding students at a local school with free food!)... [ MORE ]

What Food Best Represents NY?

Cat photo aficionados I Can Has Cheezburger took some time out of their busy schedule of posting pictures of semi-incomprehensible lolcats to post Food By State, a picture-graphic tutorial that gives each state an edible representation. Some of them make sense (California=Grapes), some are bizarre (Utah=Green Jell-o), and some are too true (Nevada=Buffets). NY was represented by pizza, and although Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia would probably agree with their assessment, others might ask, "but what about our chicken wings, or our all organic bodegas? Shouldn't we have a rainbow-colored flag of different ethnic foods?" But it comes down to the triangle: do you think pizza is really the quintessential NY food?... [ MORE ]
